San Francisco Design Week “Community”

For my submission to this poster event initiated by San Francisco Design Week on the theme of community, I was contemplating interrelationships and connectedness. Inspiration arrived after a rainstorm and I observed an ant raft in my back yard. The ants formed a living raft, where the ants circulated continuously from bottom to top so none of them drown. Sink or swim or... float! The text is a poem written in the imagined voice of the ants.
The poster was part of a fund-raising event with the idea that people would buy the poster. No one bought my poster, so I suppose from that point of view the result is a failure. However, without this assignment I would never have noticed an ant raft in my yard, or had the opportunity to work with James Edmondson, so from that personal perspective it was a huge success.
